Liz Speaking with Birdcage

Speaking at Changing Hands Bookstore

“‘A birdcage! Is it a birdcage?’ A two-foot arrangement of airy filigree scroll work sat absurdly on top of Tony’s hard, blue Samsonite suitcase.” (from page 68)
In the beginning, the birdcage was a symbol of lightness, spur of the moment fun, and through the lacy scrolls, a carefree freedom. As the years went on, I saw it as the cage it was. Tony and I both were held captive, trapped in the prison of Alzheimer's disease. These days the birdcage is suspended over the kitchen counter, allowing the Colorado breeze to flow through it and remind me of the good times.
